Cape Town - A wild chase through city streets on Monday claimed the life
of a motorcyclist after he was hit by a racing minibus taxi in
Heerengracht Street.
The chase happened at about 08:00 when
traffic officials followed the taxi after its driver had disregarded a
traffic sign and sped off when officials wanted to stop him.
According
to police spokesperson Captain Ezra October, the driver of the taxi,
apparently a 17-year-old unlicensed driver, drove away from officials at
high speed, after which he made several illegal U-turns in Adderley
Street, Heerengracht, Strand Street, Long Street and Riebeeck Street.
According to Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha,
Brookes was critically injured when paramedics arrived on the scene and
treated him.
Shocked bystanders watched as paramedics tried for
over an hour to save Brookes’s life.
“The patient’s condition
deteriorated and he died on the scene due to his injuries.”
October
said they were currently investigating a case of culpable homicide but
that other charges could later be added on.
The owner of the taxi
will hopefully be able to help us find the driver.”

The biker, Kevin
Brookes, 51, from Newlands, lost control of his motorbike and collided
with a white Volkswagen Polo.
The bottom part of Brookes’s right
leg was ripped from the rest of his leg during the accident. According
to witnesses, he skidded between 15 and 20m over the road after the taxi
hit him.
The taxi driver sped away from the scene but jumped out
of the vehicle outside the Naspers building and ran in the direction of
the harbour.
October said they found the driver’s ID document in
the taxi, which showed that he was 17 years old. At the time of the

POPULAR actor and comedian Mandla Thabethe, popularly known as Bongo on SABC1 sitcom Family Bonds, has died.
Thabethe was involved in a bike accident with one of his riding partners in the early hours of yesterday.
They were on their way back to Emperors Palace where his
bikers club, Sopranos Biking Club, was having their annual general
meeting when the accident happened at about 5am.
Members of his club said he was following David Machile
on his Harley Davidson when they approached a sharp bend and Machile
hit the brakes.
Thabethe rode into Machile and died on impact. Machile,
who sustained minor injuries, was treated and later discharged from
hospital.
Thabethe was also a producer who starred in several
literacy education adverts. But he is best known for his role as Bongo
in Family Bonds since 2007.
He was a nominee for Best Actor in the comedy category in the 2010 South African Television and Film Award.
His former biking captain and friend Khumo Sepeng said:
“I met Bongo for the first time three years ago in Mpumalanga when
bikers and celebrities did a charity gig. He rode with me the whole
weekend.”
Thabethe’s wife Mapula was too distraught to speak to Sowetan yesterday.
Johannesburg - Four people were seriously injured on Sunday in what paramedics called a freak motorbike accident in Magaliesburg.
ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said the accident occurred alongside the T1 Road.
"A
man on his motorbike lost control and crashed into a nearby veld...two
people jogging witnessed what happened and went to check on the man.
"As they were running towards him, a woman who was riding another bike lost control and hit the joggers."
Paramedics arrived on scene to find all four had been seriously injured.
"They
all sustained multiple injuries...the woman from the motorbike had to
be airlifted to hospital...both bikers don't seem to have any
recollection on how they lost control," Vermaak said.
A motorcyclist was killed when he collided with a truck east of Johannesburg on Friday afternoon, paramedics said.
The truck, going towards Roodepoort on Hendrik Potgieter road, had made
a u-turn and was blocking the oncoming lane near Featherbrook Estate,
ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.
The 34-year-old biker, going in the direction opposite to the truck
slammed into the front of the vehicle around 5.30pm. Paramedics found

Johannesburg - A man died after crashing his

Gauteng paramedics said. It is suspected the man in his
thirties went on a pleasure ride with another biker along Main Road,
said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha. "The one rider lost control of his bike slid several meters before smashing through an electrical fence," he said. The man's body came to rest 10m from the roadway. Paramedics tried to stabilise the man and transported him to the Sunninghill hospital. He died at the hospital of multiple injuries.

we can not emphasize enough: Take care of yourself on those bikes, nobody
else will. Please make triple sure before climbing on a bike and also make
triple sure when riding on the bike.

Drunk or sober other road users are dangerous they just brake or turn with no warning and then we are attending a funeral.

A minibus taxi driver who allegedly ran down a 16-year-old girl
scooter-rider in Pretoria should be charged with murder, the Freedom
Front Plus has insisted.
Bernadine Kruger was killed when a taxi hit her scooter and then ran
over her while she was riding to school in Garsfontein at about 7am on
Monday.
Conrad Beyers, FF+ councillor in the Tshwane metro, said his party had
legal advice that the taxi driver should be charged with murder.
"According to the legal principle of dolus eventualis, a
transgressor who could envisage and reconcile himself with the fact
that his actions may lead to somebody's death, but continues with those
actions, may be guilty of murder," he said
Legal advice says legal principles demand the driver be charged with murder
.
"All information points to the fact that Bernadine's death was not due
to simple reckless driving but that there was an element of intent to
hit her scooter to force her out of the way.top.DisplayAds('SquareAV',19,751);
"This is murder, not culpable homicide," Beyers said.
His party said an investigation should be launched into why the taxi driver was not arrested at the scene of the accident.
"It is unacceptable that taxi drivers always get the benefit of the
doubt when they transgress the law. That is one of the reasons for
their reckless and callous attitude towards the law and their fellow
road-users.
"They simply act as if the law does not apply to them."
Police Inspector Job Mashiane said the taxi driver had
been charged with culpable homicide. - Sapa

Accidents: Shock for Devon OAP after finding dead biker in his spare room
A man found a dead biker in his spare room - after the rider flew through a window crashing off a country road.
John
Botwright, 71, heard "a noise louder than a bomb explosion". And when
he investigated, the body was in the midst of the wrecked extension of
his home.
The unnamed biker, in his 50s and from Exmouth,
Devon, was catapulted over a hedge while his Triumph Tiger 650 landed
on the garage roof on Saturday. The now-unsafe 300-year-old cottage, in a dip on the B3919 at nearby Doddiscombsleigh, must be partly demolished and rebuilt.
But
retired London traffic cop Mr Botwright, who was about to sell up
before joining his wife at their new house in Dorset, said: "My
thoughts are more with the poor man's family.
"What I saw after a noise louder than a bomb explosion was very distressing."

They were riding and he missed the corner and took either a robot or a light pole right out of the ground with his body. Will keep you updated as things progress. Hein Jonker: CMA Durban wrecked his bike Saturday 11th July,- But he's fine!
Accidents: Tragic biker praised for warning others before dying on the road
A motorcyclist from
Corby killed in an accident has been commended for his "selfless
efforts" in warning other motorists of a hazard in the road.
Corby biker Darren Wildman died when a sofa fell from the back of a pick-up truck and led to a collision.
Mr Wildman was praised for his warning efforts by Judge Sean Enright at Peterborough Crown Court yesterday.
Jurors decided the 34-year-old was responsible for the crash which
claimed the life of Mr Wildman on the A1139 Fletton Parkway,
Peterborough, last June.
Barnes had denied causing the biker's
death. Judge Enright warned him to prepare for a prison sentence when
he returns to court for sentencing next week.
The jury were
earlier told Barnes, who directs a recruitment agency, was transporting
a sofa on the back of his Mitsubishi Triton pick-up when the crash
happened.
Witnesses said the sofa flew from the vehicle and landed on the inside lane as Mr Wildman approached on his Kawasaki.
Although
the biker swerved to avoid the obstacle, he crashed into Barnes'
stationary truck and was killed after turning to warn other motorists
of the hazard.
William Carter, prosecuting, said Barnes was
responsible for the crash because his failure to secure the sofa
amounted to dangerous driving.
But defence barrister Ian Bridge said he died as a result of a lapse in his own concentration.
Barnes, of Danegeld Place, Stamford, will be sentenced on Thursday.MPUMinCharsCutOff:210 PageLength:1596 MPUPositionFromStart:250 MPUPositionRange:1000 hasVideoOrImage:False -->

Johannesburg - A 44-year-old motor biker was severely injured on
Friday when he collided with an electric cable hanging over a road,
ER24 said.
Scene Safety Officer Werner Vermaak said the man was driving
his motorbike down Beyers Naude Drive when he collided with the cable
hanging about a metre from the ground in the middle of the road.
He was flung from his bike on to the tar.
"A bystander on the scene explained that someone allegedly tried
to steal the electric cable next to the road and the loose end fell on
to the road surface," Vermaak said.
"Paramedics from ER24 that arrived first on the scene, found
the man lying in the road in severe pain. He sustained multiple
injuries and had to be stabilised on the scene before he was rushed off
to a nearby hospital for further medical attention," he said.
The cable was removed.
It is with sadness and unfortunate irony that we report the death of
Brian Cannoo, chairman of the Think Bike! motorcycle safety awareness
campaign, from injuries sustained in a road accident on Saturday,
February 16.
Cannoo was part of a group of Think Bike! members attending a track day
at the Phakisa circuit near Welkomn in the Free State. He and three
other motorcyclists rode to Welkom to eat after the track closed A bus allegedly made an illegal U-turn in front of Cannoo, who was leading the group.

Cannoo was one of the founding members of the revived Think Bike!
campaign in 2006 and had served as the chairperson since then. He was
instrumental in promoting the term ATGATT (all the gear, all the time).

South Africa's soap opera fraternity is shocked by the death of yet
another actor. Antonio Summerton was killed in a motorcycle accident in
Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg, last night.

after cutting a light pole in half. Paramedics said the man lost
control of his bike and hit the light pole. He was found dead at the

Summerton will be sorely missed.

I watched the tragedy unfold in front of my eyes. A whole bunch of guys
(+- 10) were returning from the Villiersdorp rally and were really
motoring down the hill towards the corner at Drummond Arms. The all
braked very nicely, took the bend, and I remarked to my companion,
Whitey Templeton (ex Bloem man like myself) that it was really a great
sight to see. Then about 400 metres later another bike comes down
the hill and one could see immediately that he was going too fast. I
said to Whitey that THIS dude was going too fast. Well, the rest is
history. Appears that the rider was a "Sunday biker" and, once again,
it proves that you have to ride a lot more than once a week if you want
to ride a Superbike properly & safely. Like golf, the more you
play, the better you get. The GSXR K7 was apparently almost new, and
although I don't know the facts, it's a safe bet that he was an old
biker who was used to an older slower machine. An old GSX1100/FJ1100
etc. is NOT anything like the new stuff, and the sooner guys know and
accept this, the less high-speed accidents there will be. A 100bhp and
240kgs is not 175bhp and 170kgs with acceleration and handling to
match! BIKE SALESMEN SHOULD REPEATEDLY POINT THIS OUT. Then again, who listens? http://www.thepontiff.co.za/index.php/topic,558.0.html
