Don't think that your Chinese econoscoot is less likely to be stolen
than a fancy tourer or high-tech sports bike - it's just as vulnerable
because there's a ready market for them - or bits of them. Many stolen
bikes are broken up for parts.

Vehicle recovery firm Tracker has this advice to offer on keeping your
wheels, yours.

A spokesman said: "Our figures show a budget bike or scooter is just as
likely to be on a thief's shopping list as a prestige model. Make it
difficult for them by using a range of security measures and get into
the habit of using them all the time
Don't relax
your security when you're at home
.

"It may seem like a hassle but it only takes a minute to put the bike in
the garage or the back yard, or to click on a chain and padlock. That
could save hours of heartache and expense needed to replace a stolen
bike.

"Always keep your keys safe, take care when parking and don't slack on
security when you're at home."

TWO-WHEELER SECURITY TIPS

Always lock the bike's steering and lock the bike on to something
solid such as a lamp post if you can; this will take more effort to
break.

Keep your keys with you at all times and keep them safe at home.

If you have a garage - use it!

Make sure your garage is fitted with strong locks.

Engrave the bikes VIN number or registration number on the main parts of
the bike so the bad guys can see that they won't be able to sell it -
even in pieces.

Don't advertise your bike to the world by parking it in the driveway. If
you don't have a garage, pull a drop sheet over it.

When you park your bike in a public place, park it in a well-lit area.
Thieves love working in dark corners.

Think about getting a tracking system for your bike - it'll warn you if
your bike is moved without the ignition being turned on and if the bike
is stolen, it can be located.
